There comes a time in any part-time entrepreneur’s life where they must decide if the time is right to quit their day job. This can be an extremely nerve-racking thing, as it basically signals the end of everything you ever thought was safe. For some, it’s a decision that they can never bring themselves to make, and ultimately it stunts the growth of their business in one way or another. Are you at a point where you’re thinking about leaving the security of your 9 to 5 to spend all of your time on your business? Sounds exciting right? Well there are some things you should think about before taking the plunge.

Make sure you have enough money put away

Analyze your business operating cost and the amount of money you’re bringing in. If your business isn’t making any revenue, calculate in the time it will take for your business to get there. Most small businesses fail because of a lack of capital, so prevent yourself from falling into that trap by doing some good planning.

Make sure you’re really doing what you want to do

The last thing you want to do is lose the security of your day job only to find out that you don’t particularly like what you have to do with your business. When you have a day job, your business can be like a hobby. But once you decide to make it a full-time endeavor, it becomes your job. Ensure that you’re aligning your passions with your work and you should be alright.

Don’t burn any bridges

As hard we try, you never know what could happen to your business. Make sure that you temper your excitement for leaving your day job enough so that you don’t leave with any animosity. Having to work full-time at your business can open your eyes to a lot of things, and you might need to use some of those contacts one day to get you out of a tough spot. A smart businessman tries to keep all potential helping hands on good terms. You never know when you might need one.

Quiting your normal day job to work solely on your new business can be a huge boost. You get to spend all of your time on your business, and hopefully reduce a lot of the anxiety and frustration that goes along with doing two different jobs at the same time.  Hopefully you’ll find your new work exciting that in turn helps your business succeed and grow.  If not, you can always go back to something similar if you had to.  Regardless of the outcome, at least you can ensure that you won’t have any regrets from not ever trying.
