We talk a lot about the importance of doing what you love in your career in order to feel fulfilled and constantly engaged in your work. The fact that you are interested in what you’re doing not only makes it easier to get up and go in the morning, it makes work not feel so much like, well, work. But doing what you enjoy shouldn’t just be confined to your work. It’s important for all of us to find the time in our lives to get out and do the things we enjoy to do. Doing things that you like and being around those whose company you enjoy is a big part of staying happy and feeling good in our lives.
It’s common to get caught up in our hectic work and family schedules, and compromise our own interest or activities in the meantime. Over time this starts to eat away at our happiness and possibly our health. The hardest part about it is that you may not notice it until it’s already causing you some serious strain. For example, in my current situation I don’t have a lot of free time. Any free time I do have is spent doing things for the family, or the side business ventures that I’m interested in. While I enjoy to do those things, they can still feel somewhat like work and not really just a recreational activity that I can enjoy. What I’ve found is that taking actual time out to put all the work, school, and business stuff to the side for a day can do wonders for my happiness and overall attitude.
The key to making it beneficial for you in your busy schedule is to actually plan and set a day aside to have fun. Just like putting fun in your budget, actually scheduling your fun is one way to make sure that you do it. If you have job or business responsibilities, make sure you take the time to catch up, or do it in advance so that you don’t feel like you lost any productivity. That will allow you to totally let go and have a great time for the day without your normal stresses or daily issues to deal with. In the end, you’ll find that it re-energizes you to continue on with your normal routine, and let’s you feel more fulfilled in your life as a whole. It’s those little things that we can do to help us get through the tough periods, and bring a little more fun and joy to our lives.
