Self evaluation is an integral part of personal growth. The hard part is that to truly evaluate yourself, you need to be able to look at yourself honestly. This is can be challenging for people since no one really likes criticism, but it’s really just a temporary pain while the gains could last a lifetime. We all have certain unique behaviors that make up our personality. We also each have our own stresses and environments that contribute to our behaviors and can over time start to change them.
There are times in all of our lives where we get frustrated. Personally, I’ve felt this a lot recently and that’s what sparked me writing this article in the first place. I was coming home most nights very irritable, snapping at my wife and my son over little things, and just not really being my normal self. My wife and I started talking about it to try to figure out what was going on in my life to make me so angry at home. For me, the source of my frustration is my day job. The funny part about it is that I have a really good job. A lot of people in my career field would love to work where I do, it’s really a good company that gives their employees a lot. The problem is that I’m not doing what I want to do. I recently had a birthday, and I’m just at the point in my life where I want to align my passions with my work. Each day that I’m not able to do that is just becoming that much more frustrating to me, and I’d started taking it out on my family whenever I got home.
In order to really move forward in our lives, we have to get a deeper understanding of why we act certain ways sometimes. For me, the realization that I was frustrated with my employment situation was paramount in me being able to resolve my issue. Now that I’m working towards what I want to do my frustration level has subsided, and I’m back to being myself. My family is grateful for it, and being that they know why I was acting that way, they are even more supportive of my new business ventures.
Being able to analyze your frustrations (or any emotion for that matter) is a powerful tool for bringing about positive change in your life. It’s a learning experience for yourself and those around you, and it helps to make everyone more aware of how and why they act. With knowledge of yourself, you are able to see where you can improve, and achieve those goals you set for yourself.
